Today Rose Small and the Our Community Cares (OCC) organisation launched their new food club and ‘conversation kitchen’ at Memorial Community Church on Barking Road. The food club is supported by Newham Food Alliance while the Conversation Kitchen is an extension of this run as part of the Newham Mosaic project.
The aim of the food club is to help struggling families make ends meet by providing cheap food. Through the Food Club run at Memorial Community Church on Wednesdays and the Food Bank run at St Lukes Community Centre on Thursdays, the Our Community Cares (OCC) community volunteers are supporting Newham’s Food Security Strategy.
As part of Newham Mosaic, OCC will be running a ‘Conversation Kitchen’ alongside the food club. The Kitchen will offer visitors the chance to sit and chat with OCC volunteers over cooked food. It will be a way of inviting community members who use the food club into a community that really cares and in which they can feel valued. In addition to food and conversation the Kitchen will offer a door to advice, information and support.
Many thanks to everyone who came together on a rainy morning to make this launch a success. And thanks to Feven Yohannes for providing the delicious Eritrean food.
